Over the weekend i fished the Fisherman’s Post inshore challenge with Andy Rogers. We ended up catching over 30 slot redfish and 3 keeper flounder. The last picture is our bag which consisted of a 3.7 pound redfish and a 2 pound flounder. Not as big as we were hoping but the inshore bite is red hot! Call now for a Sunset Beach Inshore Fishing Charter! While we were in the backwater, Capt Hook went on an offshore bottom trip with Preston Kendall, Julie Kendall, and Brian Richard. They caught a couple grouper, limited out on huge B-liners, some big sea bass, and many other bottom fish species. Ocean Isle Beach Deep Sea Fishing is great! It is a great time to go fishing!
Tripp ran out today to fish some bottom numbers. They had a rare catch of an American Red and some big Gag Grouper. It was a beautiful day to fish, hopefully we can get offshore this week again.
Capt. Hooks had a great 6 hour trip today with a bunch of self proclaimed hillbillies from Hickory today. They worked on the Spanish and then dropped some minnows on the 3 mile. All the guys knew how to fish but one stood out in the crowd. He was the lip ripper, if a bottom fish bounced his rod tip, he was in the boat! Great group of repeat clients, we hope to see them soon! We also had another boat fish all the way to Bald Head today. They reported not many pelicans working so they were unsuccessful in their Cobia attempt, but spanish were all along the beach.
We had a window today to hit the stream, so we brought along good friend Andy Rogers. Hit the 100/400 but had no luck for about an hour and half. Then ran to the Macmarlin about 40 miles away. We had no luck there, but we were lucky enough to find a weedline and hit a small school landing 3 of 4 Mahi on a quadruple up. They all were between 12 and 20 pounds. On the way home we hit the bottom fish picking up some Black Bass. The May Mahi bite we have always known might be late this year, it is not on fire like it has been in years past. The Spanish Mackerel are here though near Shallotte Inlet and probably along the other inlets.
Hit the Redfish today in the backwater with everyone catching one for our limit. Also had a couple Flounder find their way into the box. We hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day. Mrs. Denna even caught the first keeper Flounder!
The spring inshore bite has been hot lately. We have spent a couple afternoons catching slot reds and some flounder. Yesterday, we ventured towards Bald Head to try for a Cobia. They should be starting to turn on about now. We hooked into two but could not get them to the boat. To kill the time we shark fished for about an hour catching a couple sharks, with the biggest being about a 60 pound BlackTip. Friday we are headed to the stream of the weather is still nice.
Conditions were not too pretty for going offshore and with no need to go hard on vacation, the boys took it easy at the house. The Red Fish bite was on fishing from the beach with the boys taking a few home and releasing a few back. They also had a couple chopper Blue Fish too. Not a bad day for everyone here and at home.
With me not being able to make it up to Hatteras this week, I decided to tag along with Austin Aycock and Davis Julian. We traveled to about 600 feet and started dropping for Snowy Grouper and Tile Fish. After fishing for a couple hours, we decided to head offshore another 36 miles to try our luck at a Swordfish. After spotting a gorgeous weed line, there was no way we couldn’t put out for some dolphin. We trolled the line for 8 miles and picked up a decent 30 pounder with 2 peanuts after getting hammered by small ones. We then tried our luck for a Sword in 1,300 feet of water. About 30 minutes later we hooked up and fought him for about 50 minutes. With hopes still high, we dropped again and sat for an hour. After nothing going on, we headed home. What a feat just to hook up on one of these elusive fish. The Mahi are already starting to bite and conditions are right.
Monday was another slow day for the boys trolling only putting in one Black Fin but getting lucky with a small White Marlin. With that, the boys decided to do a little bottom fishing. They also had a visit from the tax man on an Amber Jack.
